The story of Carpet Bowls at St. Peter's.

On 17th February 1987, 18 people met at the home of Ken and Doreen Blackley to discuss the possibility of starting a Carpet Bowls club at St Peter’s. This was after many from our Parish enjoying a couple of evenings at the invitation of St Luke’s playing carpet bowls.
With the blessing of the P.P.C. we got organised. As we had no equipment we managed to borrow a rink together with carpet, bowls, and guides.
There was a problem, as only 8 people could play, four in each team, we soon realised we would need more rinks and it was not long before we built another two. Cash was needed for the project, this was raised by gifts and loans. The club could now play 24 people, however as the numbers of players grew it became obvious that we need another rink.
It was decided by all the members that we should not only build another rink, but replace the other three. The original rink which was borrowed, was eventually given to us, and this time we had returned all the ancillary equipment.
The original rinks were made up of two boards 12 feet long by 3 feet wide. As each board was very heavy, it was decided to build each rink in three parts, 8 feet long by 3 feet wide. We have to thank Peter Walker for all the hard work he put into building our four rinks.
Over the years our membership has grown, we now have over 40 members, however we are always looking for new people to join us.
Membership of the club is fairly evenly divided between ladies and men.

There are 4 competitions each season.

  • The Gladys Walker Ladies trophy
(In memory of Gladys Walker.) This is a knockout completion designed solely for our ladies
  • The SamTed Trophy (In memory of Sam Jackson and Ted Balshaw) Again this is a knockout competition where all members are entered.
  • The Tearfund Cup
This is the final meeting of our season where we have a trip by coach to Fleetwood Bowling Club. This is a knock competition of Crown Green Bowls.
  • Wooden Spoon competition.
This competition is for all the people who are knocked out in the first round of the Tearfund cup.
We finish the day with a tasty buffet tea in the club room. People who do not wish to play bowls, and also those who are knocked out in the early rounds can enjoy Freeport, the famous market, or a walk along the promenade.
